The Padma Bridge is a multi-purpose bridge over the Padma River in Bangladesh. Padma Bridge is the largest bridge in Bangladesh. Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Padma Bridge on 15 June 2022. It directly connects 19 districts of the South-Western region with the capital Dhaka. The Bangladesh government did not receive any foreign aid for the construction of the Padma Bridge. On June 17, 2014, the Bridge Department entered into an agreement with China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group to construct the Padma Multipurpose Bridge. On November 26, 2014, the construction of the main Padma Bridge began. Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction work on December 12, 2015. This bridge is connected from Mawa of Munshiganj district to Jajira of Shariatpur district and has two levels. It has a four-lane roadway on its upper level and a railway track on its lower level. Padma Bridge will be used for future expansion of rail, gas, electric lines and fiber optic cables. The bridge is constructed of a combination of steel and concrete. Padma Bridge has a length of 6.15 km, width of 18.10 meters and height of 162 meters. The bridge has six lanes and one rail. The total cost of construction of the Padma Bridge is 30,193 crores (US$ 3.6 billion). These costs include construction of bridge infrastructure, river management, link roads, land acquisition, rehabilitation and environment, salaries and allowances etc. It is the most expensive project in the history of Bangladesh. Standing on 42 pillars, this bridge connects 21 districts of the South-West region of the country. The physical works of Padma Bridge are mainly divided into five packages: main bridge, river management, island link road and toll plaza. Tender evaluation committee was constituted for various packages of physical works. The director of the Padma multi-purpose bridge project was the chairman of the technical evaluation committee. The construction of the Padma Bridge took a total of 9 years. Due to the construction of this bridge, Bangladesh is playing an important role in the regional communication of Asia and South Asia. This will improve various sectors including trade, tourism, education and healthcare. The Padma Bridge will make a major contribution to the economy of Bangladesh. Due to the construction of Padma Setu, the GDP of Bangladesh will increase up to 1.2 percent.
